Legal Aid of NC to present Kearney Summer Family Series in Henderson

(Henderson, NC) – Beginning June 20, Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) will present a series of monthly sessions on common legal issues at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson
 
“Families everywhere are looking for strategies to help them make good decisions for their futures,” said Gina Reyman, senior managing attorney for Legal Aid of NC. “LANC will present the ‘Nellie G. Kearney Summer Family Series’ this summer in Henderson to help families get information about common problems.”
 

Nellie Gray KearneyThe series is named in honor of the contributions of Nellie Gray Kearney, a Vance County native who has advocated for the needs of families in her home community and across the entire state for more than thirty years.   
 
“Mrs. Kearney’s entire life has been dedicated to helping people as an activist during the civil rights movement, an advocate for equal housing opportunities and as a supporter of equal rights for women,” noted Reyman.  “Mrs. Kearney has served as a board member for Legal Aid of NC on both the state and local levels.”

 
Three sessions will be presented:
    
“Dealing with Debt,” June 20, 2011 (Monday),
            5:30 - 6:30 PM
           The session will focus on the differences between secured and
           unsecured debt.  It will also give information about how to deal
           with debt collectors and when bankruptcy may be the right option.
    
“Renters' Rights and Responsibilities,” July 11, 2011 (Monday),
           5:30 - 6:30 PM
           The session will discuss the rights & responsibilities of renters in
           North Carolina.  Specific topics will include repairs, evictions,
           security deposits and late fees.  Information will also include tips
           about what to look for when renting a house or apartment.
    
“Summer School for Parents and Guardians: 
           Participate, Educate & Advocate for Your Child's
 
          Educational Success,” August 9, 2011 (Tuesday), 5:30 - 6:30 PM
           The session will focus on the rights and responsibilities of parents
           and caregivers in regards to their child’s public school education.
           Specific topics will include help developing study skills,
           communicating more effectively with teachers and administrators,
           understanding school policies and making education a family priority.
 
All sessions will be held at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library at
