About Us
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)3
law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income
people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal
barriers to economic opportunity. LANC operates in all 100 counties
in North Carolina through 24 geographically based offices.

LANC Offices
LANC provides legal services to eligible clients in
geographically located
offices throughout North Carolina.
Statewide Projects
Legal Aid of North Carolina also operates seven,
statewide project
units that focus on special areas of the law:
Board of Directors
Legal Aid of North Carolina is governed by a Board of Directors composed of attorneys,
client representatives and a representative of the general public.
Clients Council
Legal Aid of North Carolina receives input on priorities, policies, community
education and outreach from its Clients Council, which includes all
of the client representatives of the Legal Aid of North Carolina Board of Directors
and of the local office advisory boards.
How to file a Complaint
When you apply for legal assistance and are denied or found
ineligible to receive legal services, you may make a complaint.
At any time, if you are not satisfied with the services being
provided to you, you may make a complaint. Legal Aid of
North Carolina (LANC) has
a Client Grievance Policy for making complaints about the
services provided or appealing denials of assistance.
Pro bono
The staff of Legal Aid of North Carolina also welcomes the support of more than
3,700 private attorney (pro bono) volunteers, who donate their expertise
each year through local volunteer lawyers programs (VLPs).
Glossary of Terms Used by Legal Aid of NC
Legal Aid of North Carolina works closely with many
organizations, grantors and programs to help deliver legal
representation in civil matters to (and ensure equal justice for)
low-income people in North Carolina. The
"Glossary of Terms" is a
list (in alphabetical order) of many such entities, as well as key
operational terms.
Funding Sources
Legal Aid of North Carolina receives the majority of its funding from the Legal
Services Corporation, Interest on Lawyer's Trust Accounts (IOLTA
Program) and the State of North Carolina through the North Carolina
Access to Justice Act (Section 7A- 474.3(c)(3)). Other funding is provided
by foundation grants, United Way gifts, the "Access to Justice" campaign
and individual donors.
Administrative Office
The Administrative Office (or headquarters) for Legal Aid of North Carolina is
located in Raleigh, NC at 224 South Dawson Street and provides administrative,
financial, technology and communications support for its field offices
and statewide projects.
