Background:
Legal
Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a
Paralegal/Clerical Assistant to work in its
Boone Office, which provides free legal assistance in civil
matters to low-income persons in Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Watauga,
Wilkes, Yancey and Mitchell counties. LANC is a statewide,
nonprofit (501-c-3) law firm that provides free legal services in
civil matters to those households whose income falls below 125% of
the federal poverty guidelines.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Provide clerical and paralegal support
for the Boone office and act as a back-up receptionist for the
office. Assist in presenting community education programs,
drafting and/or revising legal documents under attorney supervision,
and developing cases for litigation. May advocate for clients in
Medicaid, employment and public benefits proceedings under attorney
supervision. Will assist in cultivating connections with
members of the private bar to develop our pro bono network
and will observe Legal Aid’s pro bono referral protocol for
selected cases. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Candidates having a paralegal certificate
or equivalent experience and post-high school education are
preferred. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred. A
desire to work professionally with others to assist low-income and
marginalized persons is essential.
Salary:
$23,400.00+ DOE.
