WARD BLACK LAW'S 11TH ANNUAL SUPER LAWYERS EVENT HONORS WOMEN LAWYERS, RAISES MONEY FOR LEGAL AID
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ward Black Law, a law firm in Greensboro, hosted the 11th annual Super Lawyers event July 26 to honor NC's top 50 women Super Lawyers (see list below) and to raise funds for Legal Aid of North Carolina.
Meeting in-person for the first time since 2019, this year’s event featured remarks from keynote speaker Judge Allyson K. Duncan, former United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Fourth Circuit's first female African American judge; Janet Ward Black, owner of Ward Black Law; and Ashley Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
In her remarks, Judge Allyson K. Duncan discussed the importance of equality in justice, providing legal services, and core experiences that changed her life to inspire the critical goal of expanding access justice around the world.
“The need is great,” said Judge Allyson K. Duncan in reference to legal aid. “It’s why you are all here. It’s why we all care. Be aware. Be engaged. Give. Fight.”
Janet Ward Black, whose firm is one of the largest woman-owned law offices in North Carolina, started the Super Lawyers event to celebrate outstanding women attorneys in our state and give them a chance to network – all while raising money for Legal Aid of North Carolina, an organization whose clients and lawyers are predominantly women.
“If lawyers don’t care about providing legal services to people who can’t afford them,” said Janet Ward Black, “Who is going to care?”
“We are here to mourn, and we are here to celebrate,” Janet Ward Black said about the event. “We’re here to mourn the retirement of George Hausen, the founding executive director of Legal Aid. We’re here to celebrate the hiring of Ashley Campbell and the 20th birthday of Legal Aid of North Carolina. We’re also here to celebrate our top 50 honorees.”
Legal Aid NC will use the money raised from the event to expand access to safe and affordable housing, protect victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, fight for equal access to quality education and affordable health care, and provide economic stability for those who need it most.
“We serve approximately 40,000 people a year,” said Ashley Campbell. “However, 360,000 people call us every year. Even though we’re serving 40,000 people with just 250 lawyers, there is still so much unmet legal need. Our goal is to work for the next several years to build a plan to meet that unmet need, but we can’t do it without the financial support of the community.”
You don’t have to be a Super Lawyer or a Legal Aid lawyer to work for justice. By donating to Legal Aid of North Carolina, you become a partner in our mission to provide equal access to justice for all North Carolinians. Learn more at legalaidnc.org/donate.
