Aftermath: Tenant Rights Post-Natural Disaster
This CLE will focus on the common legal issues that tenants face following natural disasters and the legal means available, under current N.C. statute and case law, to preserve a tenancy. We hope to address issues that attorneys are seeing on the ground working hurricane-related cases for clients, so questions are more than welcome. We will also provide guidance on the steps that tenants should take if terminating the tenancy is in their best interest, or if the property owner has issued a notice to vacate. We will also cover what assistance and/or benefits FEMA can provide to tenants post natural disaster.
Sarah Dixon earned her J.D. from Elon University School of Law and was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 2013. She has practiced in the area of landlord-tenant Law since joining Legal Aid of North Carolina's New Bern office in November of 2013. Sarah has experience with preserving and enforcing private and subsidized housing rights for tenants in Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Jones, Beaufort, Onslow, Pitt, and Martin counties. She currently practices in the Raleigh office of Legal Aid in the areas of landlord-tenant law, mortgage foreclosure prevention, Social Security Disability, education, unemployment benefits, bankruptcy and consumer law.
Roger Cook is a staff attorney in the Wilmington office of Legal Aid of North Carolina. He has worked with LANC for over 25 years, with a primary focus on housing advocacy. Roger has served as a guest lecturer on housing advocacy at Duke University School of Law, and as an adjunct faculty member in Poverty Law Practice at North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Bradley Setzer earned his J.D from Wake Forest University School of Law. He joined Legal Aid of North Carolina as an Everett Fellow and is now a staff attorney at the Wilmington office of Legal Aid of North Carolina, where he focuses on housing law.
