At Legal Aid of North Carolina, we focus on providing critical civil legal services to those facing significant challenges. Unlike other organizations, we do not engage in political advocacy, lobbying, or partisan activities. We do not handle criminal cases or class-action lawsuits, but we are committed to helping vulnerable populations, such as survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as those facing eviction or loss of essential benefits. Our sole focus is ensuring equal access to justice and fair treatment under the law.
What We do NOT do
Engage in Political Advocacy or Lobbying: Legal Aid of North Carolina does not participate in political advocacy, lobbying, or election-related activities. We focus solely on providing legal services, ensuring that all individuals are treated fairly under the law.
File Class-Action Lawsuits: Due to restrictions from our funding sources, we are unable to file class-action lawsuits. Our focus is on providing direct assistance to individuals, not large-scale legal actions.
Represent Undocumented Individuals, Except in Humanitarian Cases: While we cannot represent undocumented individuals in all legal matters, we do offer assistance to those in certain humanitarian situations, such as survivors of domestic violence or human trafficking, ensuring they have access to legal protections.
Participate in Partisan Activities: As a recipient of Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funding, we are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activities. Our services remain neutral, focusing solely on ensuring equal access to justice for all.
Handle Criminal Cases: Legal Aid of North Carolina does not provide representation or assistance with criminal cases. Our services are focused solely on civil legal matters.
Why Legal Aid Matters
The need for civil legal aid has never been greater. National studies show that 86% of low-income Americans receive inadequate or no legal help when facing serious legal issues. Without LANC, thousands of North Carolinians would be left to handle legal challenges—such as eviction, domestic violence, or loss of essential benefits—alone.
We are here to provide life-changing legal assistance to those who need it most. Our priority is ensuring that every North Carolinian, regardless of income, has access to justice and the ability to build a stable future.
