Program Description: This CLE will provide a practical overview of key Federal and State public benefits programs in North Carolina, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Food and Nutrition Services (FNS/SNAP), Medicaid, Medicare, and other important programs such as WIC, TANF, and LIEAP. The session is designed for advocates to strengthen their understanding of how these programs work and common eligibility issues. The session will also include an update on recent developments and changes in policy and procedure.

Program Description: This CLE covers the basics of estate planning and probate law and the ethical implications at each step of the process. The program will highlight the importance of estate planning regardless of a person’s income. This program will focus on Rules 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.7 of the Professional Rules of Conduct, Opinions 22, 137, 142, and 179, and 1999 Formal Ethics Opinion 4, 2006 Formal Ethics Opinion 11, and 2015 Formal Ethics Opinion 8.

This CLE will cover how domestic violence law intersects with juvenile law and intersects with military law. The juvenile law session will cover what are the proper procedures for handling 50B and 50C cases when it comes to juveniles. This will cover contempt motions for juveniles. It will also discuss how “Raise-the-Age” has impacted 50Bs and 50Cs. The military law session will focus on how military law impacts the creation of domestic violence orders, deployment for custody issues, and the surrender of weapons and exceptions for the weapons.There will also be a presentation on recent updates to the case law affecting North Carolina domestic violence practice. The program will end with a panel of North Carolina judges discussing issues in domestic violence law. | |
