Watch this video to learn who we are, what we do, and how we’re striving to make a difference in North Carolina.
Our Mission
Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.
Our Vision
Legal Aid of North Carolina is an innovative, creative, progressive, and efficient civil legal service provider to the poor, working toward an inclusive justice system. All voices are valued, heard, and respected.
Civil Legal Cases
Unlike criminal cases, there is no guaranteed right to an attorney in civil legal matters—cases involving eviction, domestic violence, or loss of benefits, to name a few. For thousands who cannot afford a lawyer, this means facing some of life’s toughest battles completely alone, without the guidance or support they desperately need. This is where Legal Aid steps in—providing a voice and hope when it feels like the odds are stacked against you.
Our Values

Our Strengths
We are the only civil legal services provider in North Carolina with a presence in every single county—100 counties, 100 communities. In 2025 alone, we handled over 25,000 cases. Our clients aren’t just those without jobs; over half are hardworking individuals striving to support their families despite living paycheck to paycheck.
Our work saves lives and changes futures:
- Protecting survivors of domestic violence from harm.
- Keeping families in their homes, preventing homelessness.
- Helping people clear criminal records to regain jobs and dignity.
With an average client income just above the poverty line, we fight every day for those working tirelessly but still struggling to make ends meet. We are proud that 90% of every dollar we receive goes directly to legal services—and for every dollar invested, North Carolina saves nearly eleven dollars in emergency and social service costs.
How We Help
We provide the legal tools people need to protect their families, build financial security, and recover from setbacks:
- Defending housing rights and preventing unlawful evictions.
- Supporting survivors of abuse and ensuring child safety.
- Restoring driver’s licenses and resolving workplace issues.
- Helping families and businesses recover after disasters.
Beyond the courtroom, we empower communities with education and outreach, giving people the knowledge to stand strong and independent.
Our People
Behind every case is a team of passionate attorneys, social workers, and staff who believe deeply in justice. They bring hope where there was despair and stability where there was uncertainty. Our partnerships with pro bono lawyers across the state amplify this impact, creating a powerful network dedicated to making a lasting difference.
