Jim Morgan

About

Jim Morgan, a former private practice attorney, joined Legal Aid in 1997. He is a supervising attorney in Legal Aid’s Wilmington office. He has served as the Domestic Violence/Family Law Practice Group Co-Manager since February 2022.

Jim received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from East Carolina University, a master’s in political management from George Washington University, and his J.D. from Campbell University School of Law.

He is a member of the New Hanover County Domestic Violence Advocacy Council; a former board president of Domestic Violence Shelter & Services, Inc., of Wilmington; a former member of the North Carolina Domestic Violence Commission’s Public Awareness & Workplace Policies Committee; and a former chair of Legal Aid’s Family Law Task Force. In 2017 Domestic Violence Shelter & Services presented him with its Ambassador of Hope Award. He has also served as Co-Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Law-Related Education Advisory Committee and a volunteer for the North Carolina Bar Foundation’s Lawyers for Literacy program.

Outside of Legal Aid, his volunteer service has focused primarily on hunger, housing, and homelessness. He served on the Board of Directors of Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity for 15 years, including two years as president. He has been an overnight host for Family Promise of the Lower Cape Fear (emergency shelter to families facing a homeless crisis). He has participated in mission trips to Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Gulf Coast, and Southern Thailand.

During the private practice stage of his career, Jim was a recipient of the New Hanover County Bar Association’s Addison Hewlett Award for Pro Bono Legal Service; the North Carolina Jaycee’s “One of the Five Outstanding Young North Carolinians” award; the North Carolina Bar Association’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award; and a Governor’s Award for Outstanding Public Service.

Jim enjoys exercising, reading history and the classics, and playing guitar.
