Who is it for?
People who live in or have a civil legal issue in North Carolina such as domestic violence, housing, public benefits, disaster relief, consumer protection, and other civil matters. Legal Aid of NC cannot handle criminal cases.

What to Expect: Steps & Timing
How does the process work?
JusticeHub walks you through: Pre-Screening → Profile → Application. You can also explore Legal Resources and Ask LIA from the homepage.
How long does it take? Can I pause and return?
Pre-screening takes just a few minutes; you can pause and return later using your secure link.
What happens after I submit?
You’ll automatically receive a submission confirmation email. While you wait to hear from us, you can upload documents and send updates from your Homepage. To process your application, our intake staff will first perform a conflict check. A conflict of interest occurs when representing you would mean opposing another client. Because we must stay loyal and fair to all clients, we cannot take your case in that situation.
If there is no conflict, intake staff will review your full information and may reach out to you inf any additional information is needed. If accepted, a file is opened and your matter is assigned to an attorney for follow-up. If you are not accepted at any stage, you will receive a notification from us about why and your application status in JusticeHub will be updated.
Eligibility & Scope
Do you handle criminal cases?
No. Legal Aid of NC handles civil legal issues. Criminal matters are referred out (e.g., to the public defender).
Do immigration or income rules apply?

What if I’m not eligible to continue
You’ll see an explanation of why you’re not eligible along with referrals and resources. You can redo the pre-screen if you made a mistake.
Pre-Screening: The Quick Check
What is the pre-screen and why do it first?
