Low-cost Help

Lawyer Referral Service

The North Carolina Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service provides brief, low-cost consultations with private attorneys in your area. Attorneys participating in the Lawyer Referral Service will charge you a fee of $50 for a 30-minute consultation. Fees for consultations longer than 30 minutes and fees for ongoing representation are set by each lawyer.

Justice Tech Resource Directory

Justice tech platforms use technology to help people understand and exercise their legal rights, navigate complex systems, and connect with information, tools, or advocates. Some tools are pure self-help and others connect you with lawyers, advocates, or service providers. Many are designed specifically for communities who face barriers to traditional legal help. Some are free of cost while others charge a minimal fee typically lower than fully hiring a private attorney. For a broader list of consumer-facing legal self-help tools, you can also explore the North Carolina-facing Justice Tech Directory curated by LSNTAP: Justice Tech Directory (LSNTAP)
